Need help with my Baja
#1
Yesterday was the fist time out except for when I unleaded it and took it to our dock. I have two problems that I know of and I'm no mechanic so I'm asking for help. First problem is my trim indicator for the outdrive. Whne the key is off it reads timmed half way but as soon as the key is turned it shows timmed all the way up. The nuts are tight behind the dash but other then that I'm not sure where to look. The drive works fine so as long as that works I'll play it by ear until I figure it out or have someone else look at it. Now second problem and it's the main one is I have a 2005 496 mag and it takes off realy slow but once on plane it's fine at cruise speed but when I go WOT the RPM's stop around 4200 and I know I should be closer to 4800. I just checked to see if it might be the hub and when I put it in foward gear I could turn it clockwise but not counter clockwise and then I put it in reverse and then I couldn'd turn it clockwise but could turn it counter clockwise. Is that the norm or shouldn't it turn at all?
Any ideas would be appreciated otherwise I"ll take it back to the marina and have then go thru it. Which I don't want to do that because of the expense and not haveing a boat until it's fixed.
Thanks.

the trim guage sending unit is on the right side of the gimbal ring,,,, small black disk,,,, make sure the wires are ok,,, if they are,,,, you can try adjusting it,,, also sometimes the fingers get dirty or break off,,, but your boat should be to new for that.
Second,,,, how big and what kind of a porp are you spinning,,,, and are you triming the boat out as far as you can before slipping

Assuming you have the right prop as mentioned above TRIM IT UP. They require a lot of trim. Trim until you start to loose speed and then put it back down just a touch.
If you have your engine OFF and your drive in gear you cannot spin the prop around both directions as if it is in neutral. Be careful it is not good to shift them unless the engine is running. Just put it in neutral and turn the engine off and you can spin it both directions.
Good luck and enjoy.

The prop is a 23 pitch mairage plus which came with the boat and I know last year everything was fine when I pulled it out and had the marina winterize it and this spring I had them summerize it and put a depth gauge in for me. I do trim it up and if I see the RPM's going high and the speedo starting to drop I trim back just a tad.
Yes I did shift the gear without the boat running. I just saw that on another site where they said don't shift without it running. How bad is it really if you do? I'll say that's the second time that it has happened that I know of where it was really shifted but I know a couple of time it's been just bumped out of neautral because when I go to start it it won't start so I check to make sure it's out of gear and it has been bumped out out gear but by looking at it you couldn't tell.
Thanks for the help.

Stuck it will get STUCK!
Sorry could not resist.
Everyone does it from time to time. I have turned the engines off on the trailer a couple of times while still in gear and never had a problem. However I had a friend to do the exact same thing with a twin setup and XR drives and they both got stuck and had the be disassembled at the top to get them free.
You are okay I'm sure just don't make a practice out of it.

Well I talked to a guy at the marina and they were wanting me to just bring the boat in so they could plug into it and see what the codes read but finally he said I could try changing the plugs so I went and bought a set and changed them and that was harder then I thought it would be. There's not an easy way to get down there and take them out. For being a 2005 model I was surprised that half of them were in kind of back shape. Took the boat out just ot try it and thinking that would fix it but to my surprise it did. So that's for everyone for your help.
