i was out running around yesterday for about 3 hours, we were in smooth water and only cruising about 3500-3900 rpm's. we had stopped and idled for a while then took back off, about 10 min later i hear what sounds like i just scattered a motor, these are bone stock with about 300 hours on them, i had good oil pressure and the temp was fine.
has anyone heard of this before? i was wondering if this maybe a one time thing or if it is common on this motor.
i shut it down as soon as i heard it, when i opened the hatch there was nothing out of place, so i turned the key so i could listen to it, it started right up but sounded like there was loose gravel in the head...

Ouch. I'd first pull the valve covers, and drain the oil/ inspect the filter. Could be a lot of things up top. If it did break something in the top end, you dont want to run the oil with debris in it. Keep us posted.

well i feel kind of stupid and some relief at the same time, i had the marine mecganic listen to it before we started removing things and it turns out tht it's not the engine at all, the outdrive is blown. it's a sound i've never heard before and one i'll never forget... so now i need to buy a drive

Sorry for your problem. I assume you have Bravo's. Kind of unusual to pop a Bravo with a small block. Might want to try and figure out why.
If that is a 1.65 ratio I have some at a good price.
