doI need a different gear on the dist or not?

Yes, buy a bronze gear or dist gear from Chevy HP.

It actually depends on the cam gear.

Most people use a pressed on steel gear so you can run a stock steel dist gear. If its all billet, then you need to run a bronze or composite gear.

The stock 502EFI cam is a Crane and they use pressed on cast gears so you can run a stock distributer.
