I had 496's HO's they make not 425 hp as advertised but 378Hp, The Ho's are around 15K each, I had bad luck, I blew one with 150 hrs, If you can find some lightly used 500's / 525's blue motors you will be better off + you can add power to them without doing all the work you have to do to add power to the 496's. I fixed my 496 problems with a pair of Mercury Supercat racing engines.

Must have been the guy before me, first time out, I just changed the oil and I was on top end 80mph and the oil pressure went to 5psi, and the dreaded knocking, still ran but no oil psi. probably just a fluke, I got the 496's cause I heard they run forever.

I run 496 HOs in my Donzi 33ZX that weighs 9,800lbs she runs 72mph and she is 425HP each both my engines have 385 hours on them and run like a clock, I change the oil every 50 hours. They are good engines but don't expect Hi speeds out of a 38.

I have almost 200 hours on mine. I recently replaced a map sensor. That's the only issue I've had. As far as the 425 rated HP, I believe it. I replaced my 454 Mag
(385 HP) and picked up a solid 4 MPH.
I paid around 13.5K for just the motor, a few years ago.

I don’t know about current pricing, but if my memory is correct we paid $19k in ‘06 for a complete 496 Mag with transom assembly and Bravo 1 installed... complete repower with all new parts. I sold the old 454 and parts on ebay for $2,500. The HO was about $2,500 more, but unnecessary in our case. The only difference b/w a Mag & HO is 50hp via the computer, cam and throttle body. Maintenance performed in 225hrs has been routine oil changes, new closed cooling heat exchanger (100% salt water use) and idle air control.
