Default 454 cam swap questions...

Looking to swap the cam and valve springs out of a 1992 310 hp 454. This valvetrain appears to have positive stop rocker studs.[non adjustable] Guide plates say MARK V on the top sides. I would like to run somthing similar to a 500HP cam but prefer not to convert to a roller cam and really do not want to change the studs out. Any input would be GR8 from all reputable sources. Thanks Guys!

Go with a cam similar to a 454 mag cam or maybe a little larger. The heads won't flow enough to support a big cam. You need to go with new studs for the rockers if you go with a larger cam. You will probably need different valve springs as well. If you go with a cam over .550 lift, you will need roller rockers as well. Your best bet is to just go with 454 mag cam or similar.

The Gen V standard duty has peanut port heads and will not flow past 4000-4500 rpm. and cant possibly make power at or above that rpm range with the stock exhaust. Look for a cam in the range of 205-218 [email protected] .480-.500 lift at valve and112-114 lsa. A cam profile in this range will make lots of torque. JW.

I have two sets of the conversion studs so that you can use standard rocker arms. I also have two complete sets of stock rockers and balls, nuts for the adjustable type rocker arms. I put these on several motors and then used 1.8 roller rockers with the stock cam and would gain 300 rpm on the average for a twin engine set up. PM me for a price or if you would like any other help. Good luck, Robby

The heads and comp ratio on the 300-330HP are not going to make anywhere near 500HP and unless you switch to a large oval port with 2.19-1.88 valves, good bowl blend, some port work, at least 9.5:1 comp ratio, a suitable camshaft and a performance exhaust, you'll never get even close.
