A picture of your waterpickup would be nice though ?!
Mine is at the transom and sticks out about 3/16 of an inch ,getting around 16 pounds on my 509 with SM seastrainer and reg. seawater pump !!! Which is plenty !!

I've had great results with the Merc water pressure relief valve.
Here's a thread on it.

is there any way to install a ballvalve to lower water pressure. i know trimming the pickup works better can also let u pickup more speed. was just wondering if it works i put some on my innercoolers but havent tested them yet.

Why would u add a trublefactor in a boat if ther is a easy way to fix it and make it right for ever ?

A ball valve doesn't control pressure, it limits volume.
I installed the Merc relief valves on both of my completely stock motors after seeing over 35psi at cruise speeds. After screwing around for the better part of the summer trying different dumps, valves, different t-stat housings, I bite the bullet and installed the Merc valves. Now all is perfect!
