Powder coating lower gearcase??
#1
I just had a nose cone installed on my new Bravo lower. All the paint has been sanded off. It's just bare aluminum with the nose cone bleneded in.
Is there any special primer or process for getting it ready for powder coat??
Cord, I saw your case for sale. You said you had some primer on it. That's what sparked this question.
thanks for any help, Eric

Powder coating only requires that it is bare metal. We tried to power coat my drive with a added nose cone. We tried severel different sorts of fillers and all cracked in the oven. I ended up powder coating the top half of the drive and painting the lower grey.

Most of the time in the oven the offgas create will make for a not so good finish with powdercoating.. although you could have yoru parts baked before using a metal etching primer... was a suggestion made to me by a powder shop..... he's been donig it for quite some time... i just talked to him last week.. i'm painting mine

If you used epoxy to attach the cones, don't powder coat. It will melt the epoxy. Also, the cooking will realease a gas on the corroded aluminum causing bubbles in the powdercoating. I'm having one of my trim tabs redone cause it looked so bad after the first time..

Thanks alot for the info guys. I guess Im gonna go with paint. It's cheaper than powder coat anyway!
Now as far as paint.......I think I'll use the green Tempo spray primer and Tempo top coat. Does that sound like the best method? Or is there something else I should use?
Thanks, Eric

Eric,
As long as you are freshwater boating the Tempo green primer and topcoat in the spraycan should worked well. I have used it a couple times with excellent results, and it has never peeled or blistered.
