A little big for a 454 mag, but it will work fine. You may loose a little torque in the low and midrange rpms.

You have to look at what you are going to do with the engine boat combo. Your builder is right. Unless you are going to be running at WOT most of the time. Most people over cam and carb there motors, then run it in the 2500 to 3500 rpm and wonder why its a pig. I have dynoed alot of manifolds. I have made more HP and torque with simple dual plane manifold in alot of applications. If you are going to at WOT (4500@ up) the hp 500 intake will be fine. For low end it will hurt you. It is all up to you and what you want to do with your set up.

I would talk to your builder to see if he can weld up the floors in your helads and intake. This might not be cheap depending what area your in however well worth the time and expense. Even 540+ CI's like the smaller ports. It helps make a lot of torque. Don't be real disapointed however you may want to consider selling what you have and starting over. I have always been a big fan of oval port heads as long as your not going over .600 lift and 5600 rpms. Also unless you have real big cubic inches.

Good luck and keep us posted.

The HP500/ Dart intake is one that does not loose as much power down in the lower rpms as most other single planes. I'm sure thats why Merc used it. I would just run it since you already have it.
