Got a question about wheel bearing grease . Should you pack only the wheel bearings themselves or fill the hub with gease inbetween the races in the hub?

That is exactly why they have Buddy Bearing type caps to keep the entire hub filled with grease. The more grease the less water can come in, the extra grease is not for lub as much as water displacement.

Pack bearings.
Install.
Fill hub with grease via grease-zerk.

I never heard that toooo much grease will hurt !!!

Thanks guys , I thought I had read that filling the hub created more heat and the expansion of the grease would leak past the seals . Maybe the water thing takes presidence.

Yeah, Pack that bad boy solid full. Then it will sling grease all over the side of your boat when it has no where to expand. Bearing buddys suck. Use Air tights, pack bearings normally, use the slight air pressure to keep out the water. No fuss, no mess.

I have heard that if you pack the grease in too tight it will blow out the rear seal. I just installed new axles on my trailer that have what they called EZlube. Basically there is a hole down the spindle to the back side of the bearings and a zerk on the front. As you pump grease in the front it goes to the back and pushes the old grease out the front, in theory. Lost three hubs due to water intrusion past bearing buddies two weeks ago, all at the launch ramp.

I just reworked my trailer hubs recently as I have been having some seal issues. Go to a local hardware or bearing shop and get some good seals. I have had best luck with SKF. The Chinese no-name always seems to leave me with a mess. . .

Too much grease is a very big mistake. Push the rear seal out or even get into the brakes and catch on fire. Grease is good, too much grease is bad.
