Default Gen 5 to Gen 6 ?'s

Will hydraulic roller lifters and cam from a gen 5 block work in a Gen 6 block? Is there anything else that will not interchange, like the oil pan. Can I use Mark 4 merlin heads on a Gen 6 block? My ruined block and crank was a gen 5 HO block with a lunati crank, but had a two piece rear main seal. The one I found is a gen 6 merc block and crank. Any help would be appreciated. Trying to find out exactly what will interchange and what wont. Pan I have is a Hardin 10qt pan, looks like it is for gen 5 and gen 6, but I thought most gen 5 had a one piece rear main.

I ran merlin heads on my gen 6 502 block, not sure about the pan if it fits a 2 piece rear main seal block I doubt it's going to fit your gen 6 block w/1 piece rear main ,Smitty

Lifters for the Gen 5 are a retro fit and I don't think they will work with a Gen 6. Timing cover is also different. I'm pretty sure the Merlin heads will work fine. Not sure which head gasket you'll need.

I have the merlin heads from 01 they were the marin heads for a gen5 motor and they fit a gen 6. the water passages are not the same from gen 4 to gen 5. the gen 5 block is a 1 piece seal, the gen 4 older blocks were a 2 piece. and I am sure the gen 6 is a 1 piece a friend has one I will ask him today. and he put my old mod gen 5 heads on his gen 6 block. the timing covers don't match. and check with a speed shop if the # numbers on your lifters and cam are listed for gen 5 or 6 in the order book. he bought a cam and lifters from teague and used them on his gen6 block with my gen5 heads. hope this helps a little, I will call him in the am later he is not up now. art ps if you do use the cam and lifters try to keep them matched up and not thrown in a box I was told.

Mine is deffinately a gen 5 block, I ran the casting number and no fuel pump boss, and it had a two piece seal. Maybe this had to do with the after market crank? Hopefully yhe pan will interchange, as they are fairly expensive. As far as the lifters are concerned it is hard to find info on aftermarket roller lifters for a gen 6 block. Lunati shows same lifters for gen 6 and gen 5. other do not.
thanks for the advice.

Just got back from machine shop, my block has a adapter to run a two piece seal. That way you can run a older style slit crank in a new block, oil pan is setup to fit gen 5/6

Oil Pan should have Wide front and back for Gen 5/6. If it does, it'll fit. Your Merlin Mk4 Heads will fit the Gen 6, use the Merlin Gaskets and Gen 6 Head Bolts (Gen 6 502s have open head bolt holes in the block apparently).
The cam won't work, neither will the lifters. That's okay too because if you want to increase lift, you need the slightly longer shaft roller lifters to stop them popping out of the guide holes. Nearly everything else will work if it's salvagable; Rods, etc. Crane had a good set of Gen 6 lifters, Crower now has a similar set for the same purpose. Your Balancer will work (as long as they are both internal or external balanced and you're not going from on to the other?)
Check your flywheel, if it's PN 14096987 it should be good to go. If you had a 2 piece RMS crank, the flywheel will be different (the Gen V/VI crankshaft flange has no counterweight) so the flywheel probably wont fit, you need the correct Gen V/VI flywheel and again these differ dependant on your rotating assembly weight. The oil pump wont interchange and as stated, neither will the timing cover.
Hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Ghostrider, The pan I found out will work. The cam is a crane 771, it will work with the gen 6 block. I think the lifter are useable too. Here is a link, but I believe they are the deep lifters from crane useable on the gen 6. Here are pics if anyone knows.
