Question How to test and alternator ?

Question. If I have pulled my alternators. (motorola single pole). Is there a simple bench test I can do. Can I just connect a volt meter to the positive and negative, spin it up to 1500rpm, and see voltage..........or..........do i need to hook up a +/- power source to excite it first and do the same..........or..........something else? (just to check for 12->14 volt rise and not amperage).

So I have a general idea if they work or not before I take them for the rebuild.

Most auto parts stores will spin test them for free.
How's that for an easy solution.
