Default Engine rotation help

Fired up the SB engine today after rebuilding what seems like everything, including the raw water pump. First thing I alway check is for water coming out exhaust. None. Shut her down quickly and started wondering if I put the intake and discharge hose on the raw water pump backwards. The diagram on the back of the pump refers to engine rotation and which hose goes where for left and which for right hand rotation. I think I set it up for left, wrongly. Is a standard engine rotation right or left? I have bravo drives so both engines rotate the same way, like a car. It is a BBC.

Luckily it's the SB engine. I have also become a contortionist since owning a boat. My wife thinks that is really cool

I ran the beast maybe 1 minute tops. Had plenty of grease on the impeller. Do you think I wrecked my new pump?

I believe you will find that a LH engine rotates clockwise at the harmonic balancer or counter-clockwise at the flywheel and is considered "Standard Rotation".

David is correct. Counterclockwise or Lefthand rotation looking at the rear of the engine. Almost all internal combustion engines turn that way. Good luck. Hope you didn't burn anything. If you had water going in from a hose you should be ok. The water would be going to the pump and immediately be forced back but, some would be touching the impeller so it probably did not get hot.

Isn't that what I just said-- Looking at the front of the engine it turns clockwise. All of your engine books will show rotation looking at the front not the back. Looking at the back it turns counter-clockwise. And if the pump is running backwards it WILL NOT LET WATER UP THE HOSE since it is trying to push air out of the outdrive water inlets. If you had grease on the impeller I doubt that you damaged it. Whats really great is that I can change a cam without pulling an engine. I can sit on the floor in front of my engines. And yes the back seat is still in.

Tinker- yes you are correct in that it does rotate clockwise at the front, but you put "or rh" which to me indicates "right hand"

Cool

I said rh as in right hand because some people dont understand clockwise. rh rotation looking at the front of the engine.
