Can railings be removed

Ok on older boats they have the metail railings. I know they can be removed, but usually is it just two screw holes that will be left behind? or are they glued down as well. Dont know if anybody has done this and reccomendations. Im sure some pros might do it, cant be a huge cost to fill and buff about 20 holes out. Any ideas, i think taking the rail off would update the look.

The 311 that i bought the previous owner removed the bow rails on it, he used a simple black plastic plug with resin to seal it in. (they can be bought at Lowes in the hardware section) It does not look bad at all. Looks better than the rail in my opnion.... But they are handy to have on there when docking, or going inbetween 2 boats at a raft up...

there low already. I imagine i could find the right materials to do it at lowes or a marine store. I know that probably up close you could always tell, im just trying to get it so from 10ft away its no noticeable.
