Agree with the others. 7ish. I spoke to MercRacing about this. First time I put in 8 qts and went about my way. It was a bit over the full mark on stick, but I figured, 8 was 8 per the manual. Not so fast. Merc says it doesnt hurt to be a little overfilled, just dont be more than 3/4" - 1" over the full line. He said that is why there is not a high pressure alarm, just low pressure oil alarm. For peace of mind on this second change mid summer, I drained 1/2 qt out of each engine. Im just a tad over full line now. So, for me in the future. 7 1/2 qts max on the change, every 25 hours as the book says....

It depends on how you are changing it.
IF you are sucking it out the dipstick, you are leaving oil in the pan.
Every time I've ever changed oil, I drain it out the pain drain, let it drain for at least a day with the bow tilted up, and I also let the oil filter drain into the pan and out the drain. (Break seal or pole a hole in it for inverted oil filters.)
This get's every last drop of oil out of the motor IME and IMHO. Then I put the factory spec back in, which is usually 8 for most stock Mercury BBC.
