I am currently looking at a 2001 Ford F-250 with a 7.3L Diesel, 77k miles. It does not have the Lariat package, the body is straight (looks like it has never been wrecked), interior is clean. Anything other than the transmission and ball joints I need to look for? What should I expect to pay for a low mileage F-250 with a 7.3?

Sounds like a great truck.

Check for oil pan rust. (They can rust completely out.)
Front wheel bearings. (Wear out.)
Transmission fluid and maintenance.
Rear differential fluid and maintenance.

Does it have a fifth wheel or gooseneck, and/or an electric brake controller? Chances are it could have a lot of heavy load towing if such.

I will check for rust and the front wheel bearings. No signs of fifth wheel or gooseneck (has a canopy that looks like it has never been off).

A little more info about the truck, it is a 4x4, auto trans, extended cab, short box.

$16-17K would be my guess on a good price. Wouldn't surprise me to see it listed closer to $20K with the low mileage and as clean as you say.

Also, check Autotrader.com , Autotempest.com , and eBay.com to find out what similar vehicles are being advertised and sold for.

edmunds and kbb prices are nowhere near reality here on the east coast there way higher then what things are selling for.

i agree w Baja on the 16-17k figure...a 75,000 mile above avg condition lariat just sold at the auction for $15700. means the lariat prolly retails for $18-18500

Look for oil leaks around the turbo pedestal. Get a flashlight and look around where the turbo mounts and in the valley of the "v" for leaks.

I also had to replace the o-rings in the fuel filter assembly. Apparently the low sulfur diesel is hard on them (fixxer?). It was an easy fix and it corrected a small fuel leak.

That's a really low mileage for 10 years old, people usually buy these things to run em....I'd get a carfax on it to make sure there is/was no "inconsistencies".

They are asking $19k, I think (hope) I could get it for $15k.

My only reservation/concern is this will mainly be used to pull the boat and a dump run a couple times a year, I don’t like to have $15k sitting doing nothing but loosing value. I could sell/trade my 2007 ½ ton and add $15k and have a 2010-2011 ¾ ton for the same amount of money.

Check in the doors too. The seal on the bottom of the doors tends to trap water and whatever else, i.e. salt and whatnot, and tends to rust the hell out of the bottom of the doors.
