Default Checking full advance

When checking your timing for full advance , is it necessary to have a load on the engine or can you run rpms up in neutral ? Thunderbolt IV ignition with V-6 module(14*) Everyone says not to worry about base timing. I have a supercharged application so timing is more critical. Are ignition modules acurrate ? If I set my base at 16* will I end up with 30* or is this not very accurate ?

Thanks in advance no pun intended !

Advance is RPM based. No need for a load.
If it's Thumderbolt V don't forget to disable the knock sensor.

You don't have to load the motor. I would not rely on ignition modules to determine full advance numbers. You have to set up the light to check base, so you may as well check your advance.

When using the V-6 Module in a V-8 the 14 deg adv. becomes much less. (somewhere between 6 and 10 deg.) So if you are looking for 30 deg. final, set it at that at over 3000 R's (loaded or unloaded) and you will probably have about 22 deg. initial. --- Jer

Default RickR....

Why do you say disable the knock sensor on a ThunderBolt V? And how do you do that? Just unplug it?

Sorry to interupt Beek!

Thanks, Eric

TTT, I'm interested in the knock sensor reasoning as well. I just set my timing with a TB-V ignition and did not unplug the sensor. Please explain why to do this. The ignition did seem to retard alot once I spun it close to 4000 RPM which concerned me. I figured something was causing this.

Cool

When setting "BASE" timing on a Thunderbolt V ground the purple/white wire connector on the distributor wiring harness.
This disables the knock sensor, you'll have to check if this disables the advance also.
