Default Keeps Throwing belt...

I'm having some issues with my accessory belt staying on. I have a merc 502 efi mag. I have a m3 on the motor therefor it has the aftermarket serp acc. system. Everything seems to be lined up just fine. All pulleys spin freely. I do have a bit of in and out motion on my powersteering pulley. But only when the belt is off. But its not a lot and the one on my camaro has about the same in out motion and i think its normal. It's only throwing it under load above 4k and or if i'm about 3,000 rpms and make sharp turn. Everything at idle looks and seems to be okay. The belt on there originally was a bit loose. I went to a tighter fit belt same problem. Went back to loose fit same issue. It first started when the end of last year i took a sharp turn. Please help with any ideas.

Turning should not have anything to do with it,other than putting a load on the pump. you have something going bad my guess would be power steering pump,

Does the serp system have an automatic belt tensioner? If so, that would be the first component I checked. I would also wonder if the belt is routed the correct way? If you can get ahold of a diagram for the aftermarket set up and double check yourself that might save a bunch of headache. Good luck!

Thats my guess too. I'm going to make sure that everything is aligned with a straight edge. But either way. Replacing the pump will be preventative maintanance.

No it's a manual type and i have the ati procharger manual. It's routed right. I'm thinking it might be powersteering pump. It's just weird to me everthing was working fine and all of a sudden. And i that's why i don't think its a miss alignment. The brakets are made of 1/4 steel and everything is tight and spinning freely. I think it's the pump and maybe when it's under load. I dunno....

I have the same setup..not yet run though..but I found when they installed the set up they did not have the p/s pulley pressed back on the shaft far enough..was at least 3/8 out, could see it if veiwed from the side...now engine was out when I found it and I had the the tool to press the rest of the way on, now lines up fine...but you should not have any movement in the pump...Rob

Rob, i thought the same thing. I am a store manager of a O'Reilly auto parts store. I took about thirty pumps off my shelf and pulled on the shaft. They all seemed to move in and out a slight bit. I mean we are talking about 1/8th to 1/16th inch if that. But maybe it has loosened up a bit and needs cranked on more. You might be right there. I'm going to get up here in a bit and go work on it. I'm surely going to find out what it is and let you all know. Because time after time people post problems but don't bother posting back what the issue was so other people can know. Because you never know... It might help someone in the near future.

also, if you need to replace the pump just pull one from your inventory, that looks the same, change the pressure relief valve and spring(under nut where pressure line attaches) over from yours and you will be good to go..

Sweet good idea... But after diggin into it yesterday. I think i found the problem. After removing the supercharger and bracket. I could see the powersteering pump much better. The pulley looked "toed" in or bent inwards. You could see how the belt was riding on it. But you couldn't really see it with the huge supercharger braket in the way from the top. What happened is that when tightening down the S/C bracket it bent in a bit on the water pump bracket. The alluminum spacers behind that came with kit were about a 1/4 short. So i bought two 1/8 washers added to back side and i think we are good to go. I'll test out tomorrow and let every one know. Thanks agian for everyones idea's and thoughts. I hope i got her figured out now.
