Can anyone tell me what the purpose is of venting your valve covers into your air filter? Is there anything wrong with just putting a filter on the cover vent tube??

It's a coast guard reg that the crank case venting has to be piped so that the fumes are burned by the engine rather than filling the engine compartment with a explosive combination of air and gas fumes.
