Default Hey Guys, Help me out/ 1992 MerCruiser.

I bought a used boat 1992 sea ray, first time owner of a boat.It has 3.0L merCruiser I/O.
when i took it on river it gives starting trouble, if it starts then it runs well. while on cruising speed it makes noise of missing, yesterday on river after a stop for an hour, when i try to start it battery was almost drain, but at last it started,
the previous owner used it on lake 5 -6 times this year.
Steering is very hard,
any information please, i have no idea of this engine. I think it does not get gas properly,
Also let me know what to check and some basic maintenance to be done.
all information will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think Mr.Young from Young Performance can field this one......

PS. Welcome to the site Seth....I am just teasing, I would suggest picking up a shop manual for the engine and read up, a lot of the problems to me sound like poor storage and maintanence, do the basics suggested in the manual and go from there, good luck with it, ask more if you find other problems.

Are you sure it has a belt on it? Battery not charging, engine missing at speed, hard steering. No sea trial I assume before buying? How long was it sitting before you bought it? How old is the fuel? Water in fuel. Engines don't run on water. Welcome to boating and I am not trying to be sarcastic. Start with checking the belt and fuel and go from there.much help is to be found here so your in the right place.

That engine has a points style ignition, yes the technology we stopped using in cars in the 60's. At the very least get the ignition rebuild kit available at any merc dealer.

steering is a seized up steering cable, rough and hard starting id rebuild carb and change the cap and rotor. i see alot of corroded distributor caps thats cause alot of problems. I work on alot of these older 4 cylinder and v6 merc's and omc's

Manual fuel pump has a fuel filter in the bottom of it change that at least. We see alot of rust now a days in these manual fuel pumps. Might be wise to just change out along with a fuel sample in a clear jar to see whats in your gas tank.

Carb overhaul most likely is a must, impeller and gear oil. Ditributor cap and rotor might need to be replaced along with the spark plugs. If I remember correctly 1992 3.0 L Mercruiser is an GM EST distributor ignition unit.
