Bad news.

Sick boat.

12' wave doesn't seem like a deal breaker in a 70 foot boat to me?
It would definitely be uncomfortable but from the sounds of the story it really did a number on the crew. The article was vague though, maybe the hit it at speed, not paying attention?

Well, if you look at the pic in the article there is no glass windshield.... so was that something added after the fact? I think a 12 ft wave coming over the bow of a 70 fter is enough to knock you out of the boat especially w/out the windshield. I'd like to see if I can find a pic with the windshield.

If you look the pics on the Mystic website, it looks like there is a retractable windshield (might be fixed?)...don't know that it would offer all that much protection in a situation like this, especially if you are not standing right behind it.

Agreed.

But how the hell did it get to that point? You see the layout of the boat, there's 35-40' of bow. Even the slightest bit of heads up seeing it last minute I'd think the boat should be able to brush a 12'er off no prob.

I've crashed my 22' through series of 6-7' whale watch boat wakes before w/o issues.

I'm not trying to downplay the loss of a life, it just isn't making full sense to me.

That's half the size of the 12 footer plus there's probably a trough that makes it even bigger. That boat doesn't seem like it's more than 6 above the water line. I wouldn't want a 12' coming at me...I turn around when the water gets above 5'.
