There is wood in my Lavey. Along with carbon fiber and Kevlar. Wood is a predictable substrate and the different types of marine wood products has been refined to the nth degree.
There is truly no substitute for wood when the wood is properly encapsulated and used for the proper reasons. If you determine to use absolutely no wood you give up a light rigid proven product. The substitute construction options have their own set of issues.
The process Lavey uses is right on. Wood is superior in the right circumstances in the right hands. Quent

there is nothing average about marine grade plywood .best wood grain veneers, no patches, special water resistant glues ,and more
compare the price to an average sheet and you will understand why
unfortunately......... many manufacturers use inferior grade materials and pass them off as marine grade there is no escaping better materials cost more
