Assuming both packages would cost the same and run the same speed, which would most people want and be better for sales. Let's say the boat is a 30' cat and the engines are twin mercury 6.2's/bravos, vs. single 525/xr's.

You put a single in a cat and it's not a true tunnel...I'd bag on the single. 30 cat is probably best with outboards but there's smarter cat people here that can chime in on this.

In general I'll never go back to single after having twins. This conversation only takes place with smaller boats anyway so I'd always go a bit bigger so I could have a twin package.

This is a very open question. There's boats that will handle much better as singles, and some who runs much better as twins. It depends on the boat in question. Personally I generaly like twins much more than singles for a lot of different reasons.

Twins = Redundancy

In your scenario, the single. Less maintenance, more efficient because only one drive is in the water, only one prop to worry about or purchase. Fresh water towing is really cheap with TowBoatUS so don't worry about the back-up engine thing.

30' is a lot of boat for a single. RPM makes a nice single engine tunnel, but it is 26'. It has a center pod.

My 292 Fastech has twin 6.2's. I was considering the 271 with a single 525 but the cost was essentially the same, along with similar performance. I got the bigger boat with the handling and redundancy of twins, along with the long term reliability of black motors. I'm happy with my choice.
