And now to hijack my own thread- the 454 had square port heads which have been ported, he was surprised by that according to him this type of head application makes its hp around 7300-7500 & obviously not a marine application. He is suggesting oval port is the way to go-makes power/torque in the lower rpm band

makes perfect sense i have had to many inboard cabin cruisers i guess

If that is the camshaft in question in a standard marine 454 engine , rectangle ports or not, I can guaranty you that size camshaft is well done making peak power way before 7300-7500 rpms, not to mention I don't know of any big block marine 454's that will turn those rpms on a stock hydraulic flat tappet setup and stock rocker arm valve train and stay together for any reasonable length of time.

And several others. Back in the 80's they came on the 370-400-440-460 cyclones. What are some of the other specs of this engine, exhaust, intake, carb, compression? Here's what Crane states in their catalog for that cam.

Fair idle, performance usage, good mid range HP, mild
bracket racing, auto trans w/3000+ converter, marine
performance for 500+ cu.in. modified engines w/
center riser type exhaust system & 4” outlets, requires
large oval or rectangular port cylinder heads for performance
applications, 3800-4200 cruise RPM, good
w/ manifold nitrous system, 10.0 to 11.5 compression
ratio advised. Power Range 3000-6800rpm

That crane cam is the next size bigger than the stock 420/525SC cam. Probably needs to spin about 5800rpms to make peak power.
