Default 2010 GMC back up camera

Hey Guys!

My father recently bought a 2010 2500HD pickup, he is kicking himself now for not getting the "back up" camera that fits in the tailgate latch and displays in the mirror.

Has anyone replaced or retrofitted one of these cameras? Does the entire mirror assembly have to be changed? I tried going to a local dealership and asked the "experts?" there, but, they weren't much help.

Is there an aftermarket set up that will work? My main concern is the mirror has all the "onstar" stuff on it and I don't know how involved it is to change?

Any/all info appreciated!

Thanks!
Michael

Ya, I priced it here too, around $1000, seemed like a pile of dough for a back up camera

+2 plenty of aftermarket options out there for a fraction of the cost.

The truck should have all the wiring in place for it in the factory harness. You should be able to talk to a quality stereo shop that can do the upgrade for you, but if you want to go with factory parts, it will not be cheap.

The higher the camera the better, so I'd go with the one that goes into the tailgate handle if you can. When they are low light just over the hitch/license plate, its very difficult to judge depth/distance.

yeah the wiring should be there. But Im kicking my dealer as when i built my truck i had the camera on there, and it didnt show up on the truck. Mine is a ford though and from what I have found you can get the parts which alone are 800 bucks. From what I have read its hit or miss on a ford if the correct wiring is in the tail gate.

If it were me id get the license plate one in wireless and call it a day. I learned my lesson next time see the build sheet as it was a 3 or $400 add from the factory

Same! I think Dad said it was only a couple of hundred extra for the Camera, now it will be a fortune, he likes the idea of a high mount one, he tows a big fifth wheel RV, So, its nice to have a good view when backing up.

Anyone on here have a line/link on a GOOD aftermarket one that wouldn't be too hard to retrofit? Thanks for the input guys, guess he should have done his homework...........I wont even get into how PISSED he is that he doesn't have a rear window defroster! LOL

I saw 1 on display in Autozone @ the cashier counter. Didn't pay it a whole lot of attention but looked like a decent after market unit. My wife loves here factory one in her Suburban. I am just so use to using side mirrors that I don't really look at it. I always back into parking spots & my driveway anyway. But a salvage yard would be my first choice to check.
