I am installing a set of trim tabs. Can someone recommend a good sealant so the tabs can be removed if needed that won't damage the gelcoat?

3m 4200 is what I was told to use.

X2 on the 3M 4200. Great stuff.

What's wrong with marine silicone? Seems like everyone uses 4200. Does silicone break down?

Marine grade silicone is pretty good stuff and I always used to use Life Caulk. Then I started to see some jobs where even with "proper" cleaning, it didn't adhere. (And we all know what that can lead to.)

The 3M 4200 is actually an adhesive and seems to grip surfaces better from what I've seen. And if you want extra super gonzo grip, go with the 5200. Don't ever plan on getting it off though.

I use boat life from west marine. A complete circle around the fastening holes and thru-transom holes for the hydraulic lines. Then, a complete bead around the perimeter.

Install dry and tape (blue or green painters low tack tape) about 1/4" around the perimeter of the tab bracket.

Remove, apply boat life and be generous. Tighten as finished and squeeze the generous application of boat life out. Then take a 10mm socket to smooth the excess that you squeezed out onto the tape. Before dry, remove the tape by pulling away from the tab.

Water-tite, above and below the waterline.

+3 on the 4200.
