My dealer said he just got back from a dealer meeting on the new 30 Outlaw. It will be in production soon and from what he said they spent alot of time on the bottom and top the this boat. They claim about a 6-7mph increase over the 29 w/same power. He seemed very excited and it sounds like it will be a very cool boat.

The 30 is going to be awesome!
It'll be my next boat for sure...
I can't say much, but it will be impressive! to say the least.

There has been a ton of research work done on this boat...It will have a totally redesdigned bottom, new deck and some killer aerodynamics! Speed increases will blow you away, I assure you!

BD, what do you mean you can't say much? Are you one of THEM or one of US! I need the scoop! I know the current 29 is more of a freight train than a bullet train but 6 - 7 mph increase with
the same power and no steps??? What did they do add a 5' beak and put twin BBC's in a '25 hull!

LOL!

Well, not exactly...no beaks here! But a lot of money and R&D went into many months of wind tunnel and hydro tank testing! Literally dozens of models were tested and optimized with performance in mind. The results will speak for themselves. I agreed out of courtesy not to spill the beans, if you know what I mean.

Here's the bad part. All that time and testing is going to demand a premium price. That not only screws potential 30 buyers but potential 33 and 36 buyers. New 29's are now going for $120+. The new 30 will probably be going for $130+. Since you can't charge more for the pony than you do for the horse, the price of 33's and 36's will go up and become out of reach for people like me who were getting close to moving up into that range.

One big reason I've owned 2 Bajas is that they have always lead in the bang-for-buck catagory. That lead may be fading.

It likely won't be as bad as you think. Word is that they'd rather eat the cost of the non-recurring items, than lose their market prowess. It's a really nice niche Baja has...jeopardizing that is the last thing that'll happen.

By time you spread those costs between all the 20 different models, the differences will be negligible...After all, we are talking about 100, 150, 200+ thousand dollar boats here.

The thing that might make it tough is the old law of supply and demand not necessarily Baja's cost. If the boat is as hot as BD and other's are making out than it will be in high demand and dealers will not be willing to work the numbers as generously as with the current models. The list on these boats is ridiculous but the out the door cost is usually much lower. That may not be the case with the 30. The one bright spot may be for those looking for a good deal on a left over 29. You could make out well if folks delay moving up until the 30 is available.

Just my 2 cents................

I am very happy to see Baja designing and building new boats. I am dissapointed in the 20 Outlaw, the hammer was better, I think the 272 was a nicer boat than the 275. To me they just cut the cost to produce the boat and really did not make any useful improvements.

I'm sure they know their market and business better than I do. I have purchased three new Baja's and still love their styling and looks. The new 30 really sounds like it is going to be a success. This is the size boat that should get a lot of attention for the company.

I think Baja will have it priced right, and don't think it will effect their larger boats in any way. The funny thing is that we first considered the 342, until we discovered we could buy the 36 Outlaw for the same money.

The only problem I see with Baja is that they don't have anything to race and be competitive. In this world of high performance boats, the companies that are racing and winning are commanding the respect.

I am not saying that Baja should go to a stepped hull. Personally I like the ride, handling and safety of the true "V", or I would have bought a stepped hull. The problem is that there is no amount of wind and water testing that is going to make a true "V" run 10-15MPH faster like the steps do.

The 30 will probably be to heavy to run Factory 1, like the 29 Fountain can. I can only hope that it can be competitive in Factory 2, but it may be too short for that class. I cannot remember what the size (length) requirments are for the two classes?

Lets hope that Baja continues with the R&D and brings us good things in the future.

Happy Boating
Mark
