I had those in my old scarab...only weak link to them was the springs for the mechanical advance...they rusted and one broke screwing up my timing and giving me one hell of a fun time trying to track down my running issues!

So I don't need external ignition box, just drop in and wire? seems like affordable way to get rid of Merc stuff?

http://www.msdignition.com/Products/...stributor.aspx

at the bottom of the page is a link to the installation PDF - choose the "83606" not the one with the "_add"

Guys that is a Ready to Run meaning the electronics are built into the distributor there is no additional box needed. Here it is an a MSD version http://www.keitheickert.com/p-264-bi...-chevy-v8.aspx and here it is from MaxVolt http://www.keitheickert.com/p-16687-...-chevy-v8.aspx All marine distributors feature steel inner components that should be serviced and or oiled to avoid corrosion such as the guys broken spring example above.

I used the Mallory ready to run distributors on my old Excalibur hawk when upgrading from the old points distributors. They worked ok.

I gave my current MSD distributors a coat of CRC Corrosion inhibitor spray on the insides after MSD rebuilt them. No more rusting. Leaves a light protective film on the parts that actually kind of dries up and coats them, rather then eventually evaporate.
