Hi gang,

I'm hoping someone out there had a similar situation and can give some insight to my problem.

1995 Baja 272 with stock 502EFI
23p Mirage Plus
Totally stock boat

Trimmed out, wide open, 55 mph on GPS @ 4500rpm

It seems to run smoothly, no lag or miss. I did a tune up late last season because the wires were arcing.

Shouldn't I be able to turn 5k with this setup, or is it where it should be? I know it's not a 70mph boat, but I thought I would be able to get low to mid 60s.

I had the same setup and light light, light on fuel I was turning 5100-5200 with a 23P at about 65 mph.

check your fuel pressure i had a similiar problem with my old engine and it turned out to be pressure regulator how does it do coming on plane mine wouldnt get on plane for crap when i had my issues

It come up on plane just fine. it doesn't seem to struggle at all, just lacks top end power. I'm at a total loss.

How many hours are on the engine? There could be any number of issues. You really need to hook up a scan tool to be able to see what's going on when you run it. It could be a sensor not reading correctly, it could be going into detonation control and pulling out timing, the valve springs could be weak causing valve float, etc. etc.etc.

I would be curious to see the boat on a dyno and compare to what the book says it should put out, this is not expensive to have done at a reputable marina.

673 hours on the clock. I bought the boat last summer. I'm going to take it to Sutters this week to have it plugged into the computer.

You did a tune up because the wires were ARCING?? I would change the cap, rotor ,plugs and check the timing if you haven't as they may be all fouled out IF it was that bad. Do a compression check while you are changing the plugs, you might have a few cylinders just along for the ride and if timing is retarded it might really need a timing chain and or distributor gear. When you did this tuneup did you have the cap off distributor, the 272 Bajas have a problem with water dripping directly on the distributor (rots inside) and coil when people come in and out of the boat swimming and this has caused a lot of problems on mine. The computer isn't going to tell you a whole lot as it doesn't have a 02 sensor or fuel pressure transducer, it will only show a few simple fault codes and they are rarely the cause of major loss of top speed, Smitty

Also when setting the timing you should have the little plug in tool for the wire harness, it takes out the advance and then set your timing.
