How come no one has put a Merc 1200 or 1650 in a hot rod, like a GT40 or a cobra rep? I think it would make the ultimate pro touring car power plant! Whats your thoughts?

yeah but the "ghee whiz" factor would be pretty off the chart with the Merc

I just don't think it would make any sense $$$$ wise. If you bought say a merc 1350 for I think somewhere around $100,000 you are paying for all of the marine specific engineering and hardware that you don't need in a car. In a street/strip application this would make much more sense.

Nelson builds engines for custom street machines. I am sure that engine could be marinized, the prices have gone up since that story.

Tell ya what though, i always thought it would be cool to have a 525EFI in an old Camaro (70 to 73) with all Livorsi gauges and just a general marine spin on things, not overkill but just a tastefull amount of the hardware we use. About ten years ago there was a guy on here that did i think a 69 Camaro with an EFI and it was pretty bad ass. I suppose if i had Bill Gates kinda money then i would probably have a Merc 1350 in something just because

My last Camaro i retro'd in the drive train out of a 91 Iroc and this car killed me for carbs. I dont know why anyone would run a carb on any street rod, FI is wayyyy easier to work on and runs farrrr better. It floors me when i see some of these high dollar pro touring cars cross the block at Barret Jackson or ??? and they have carburetors on them you might as well put wood spoke wheel on them and a hand crank start sticking out from under the grill .I am in the process of doing a 71 TA for myself and it will be something fuel injected for sure, this one will be a keeper.

I dont know if a lot of people realize this but the Merc EFI was originally developed by ASM (arizona speed & marine) for street rods and was quickly snapped and developed for OEM. I dont know any of the details but i was building pro street rides back in the early 90's when this system came out then kinda disappeared, couple years later Merc introduced the 500EFI. LightningJet on here actually has three of the test engines that have the ASM logo on them.

good luck with that, go to some of the car forums like lateral g, anyone that has done business with nelson seems to have regretted it... you can not hook up 2000 hp in a pro touring street car, 1000hp is about the max you can hookup with a 335/345 rear tire.... check out this 67 camaro built by mark stielow, he is a gm engineer that pretty much started the pro tour deal.. this 67 is his 14th build... http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=36652
