Superboat Stock

I have a couple of options. A new Doug Wright carbon or a used boat (that I'm currently working a deal on).

I've been told the group is moving towards the new 200 Mercury Racing engines (which makes acquiring engines and parts a non issue).

I would like to run 2-3 races/year + Key West.

Just for fun. I think it would be a great excuse to travel a bit and be around a bunch of incredible boats and like minded people.

What kind of expenses (outside of the boat) am I looking at?

We would be our own pit crew and haul the boat ourselves.

What day do you usually arrive/leave? Trying to get an idea of how much work I would miss.

What are the best (most fun) races to do?

The goal is to be racing in 2015. I hope to purchase the boat in 2013/14, and the motors 1 year later (trying to spread the $$$s out).

What are most race teams budgets in this class?

I am a local at LOTO so we were planning on running the 40 Skater at Lake Race 2014 just to get our feet wet but I don't want to use it as a "race boat". I would prefer to beat up something much less expensive.

Ryan would be the man to talk to, he know all the in and out's of the class.

OB Cat is the way to go. Most bang for the buck. We had 8-9 boats in class when I raced. Deck-to-deck every race.

We ran an entire season(6-8 races) one year on about $45k. We were like Sanford & Son compared to a few teams though. I would guess if you own all the equipment you could run a respectable showing on $60k for almost a full season. Depends on number and location of races. We were based in Ft Lauderdale so 70% of races were within a days drive.

Last year at Key West Ryan offered a seat in his boat. You might want to try that to see what it's like

That's how I got my start. Driver got sick. I jumped in at Marathon and we WON against 8 other boats.

Stock class IS a great class to get into. Bang for your buck is pretty good too. You need to budget 5K per race and up depending on your lifestyle. We usually get into town on Friday and leave Sunday night. It is a great group of guys and most everyone will help the next guy out when needed.

That's a doable number. Probably 2-3 races per year.

What sanctioning body does everyone run under?

I'm on the hunt for next year to give it a try.

The boat we are looking at won't be ready until 2015 at the earliest.

It is the 28' Skater here in the classifieds. Doing my research now.

I love the idea of the class moving to the Mercury 200s that can be bought new and not have to find old race motors and look for parts.

where is info on the class going to 200s ? Sounds good, You know one thing is with Cat Outboard, you never hear all this inner fighting within the drivers / owners of the boats. They tend to show plenty of professionalism, and they are awesome to watch for spectators, when they come screamin in the Harbor in Key west deck to deck. WHat does a 200 do to the speeds on these boats?
