Hi Cabin Fever! I don't want to start a thread regarding 6.2 bashing- I'm not that smart. However, when we were looking for a boat, a couple of marinas that I visited indicated that they would stay away from the Mercruiser 6.2. All of them said that the life - without substantial repair- was around 500 hours. Obviously that has a lot of variables that are beyond the scope of this email.
Even though we purchased a boat, I still look at the "for sale adds" and I have seen a trend that would show that the 6.2 is somewhat a lower value that a 350 mag or 7.4 MPI.
Just my 2 cents

600 HP out of a small block is very do-able. There is about 150 # in weight savings in a small block. They wrap up quicker. In a 26' id say it would be just right.
