Default Short Boat long K-Planes?? CL Find

Came across this and Always like the 80's performance boats but was wondering what are the advantages of running really long k-planes like this set up? A good friend of mine owned and sold one of Steve Stepps personal boats. Last time I saw that one was at the boat races at Solomons Island a few years back with it's new owners.

From what I've been told those 22' Velocitys are a handful because of the pad.

They were fast boats for the time.... the long planes for more running surface I would think, theres a vid around with a 20' cig with a #6 drive, and about 700hp running long kplanes, and they have a go pro in the water at the transom, it looked like the boat was mostly running on the kplanes.....

I'd be worried that I'd break the transom off coming in for a landing.

Nothing wrong with running longer trim tabs - as long as you can pick them up all the way when you don' need them. The longer tabs effectively lengthen the hull by the length of the tab - but don't add as much drag as a hull that long would.

Here's the rub on this particular boat. Note that the ad says it has "fixed K-planes." And if you look closely at the picture, that's exactly what they are - fixed and non-adjustable. That's not exactly what I'd want.

Agreed with too stroked that them being fixed is the huge issue with them.

My 24 progression came from the factory with 380's !!

i can't agree more with you all of you. With them being fixed I can see how that would be stress on the Transom. My other reason for posting this was my IMP only has 12" trim tabs and wonder if I went another 6" if it would help. Mine are homemade anyhow so I would fab a new set with reinforcement to keep from flexing. I'm only 25.5 and I was always under the impression that it would make the boat feel longer but I just couldn't see a set this long help.

I can't comment on the long tabs but the 22 Velocity is a good handeling boat. I ran a 23 (Regal) Velocity for quite a few years. 454 Mag, 71 mph, sweet handeling and very predictable.

I found them to be dangerous on my 28 pad bottom boat, ended taking them off and selling, they did not add speed, did add a little in intermediate water, the one time the switch or relay stuck it threw the boat on it's side, nearly throwing two people out the boat at 70+ mph.

I like them just fine on a heavier v bottom boat, just not on a light fast hull.
