Default 2.5 Merc outboards

I just purchased my first outboard boat. What is the mixture ?

Is their a rev limiter ?

Is it fact or fiction on the stopping the motor to shift ?

What maintenance do they need ?

Back in the last 50's / early 60's Mercury made an outboard with NO neutral or reverse Neutral equated to 'Shut it off and reverse was (believe or don't) start the engine bacwards.
Since 2 cycles will run in either direction , the starter was set up to go either way. It was a royal pain in the a$$ and didn't go over to good. OMC loved it , but Merc. soon saw the error of their ways and went back to a standard shift type engine

Yahoo now that you got your history lesson on the "dock basher" motors I will have to get more info on your engine to know what you are looking for. I assume you mean the oil mix ratio. Are your motors 2.5 displacement engines or 2.5efi offshore motors? If they are stock 2.5 displacement engines then you mix 50:1. We ran our 2.5efi offshore race motors at 30:1. If you need any more info let me know

They are 2.5 efit 280hp, 1998 motors.

We mixed the gas at 40-:1 by mistake and it smoked pretty bad, keep the mosquitos away.

Oh ya those motors will smoke. That is good it lets you know you are getting enough lube in there. Go 30:1 with it and use a very high end oil. DO NOT cheap out. If you go to www.Screamandfly.com there is a lot more outboard info there for you. I think that Pennzoil and there is another smoke a lot less then the merc stuff.
