So had to replace my entire distributor, new one is in and it comes with additional weights and springs. Any need to adjust that or just use with the ones that are in it now. Model is msd 8555-1

You need to match the curve that the old distributor had. The curve and its rate are controlled by the springs. If the distributors are identical (or at least MSD), it should be pretty easy to knock out. Just match it all up and you're done. If not, you'll need to figure out the curve for your setup. Typically, I follow pretty close to what Mercruiser posts for their modules. That usually gets things fairly close unless it's a really radical setup.
Hope this helps some.

The new MSD most likely came w/paperwork showing various timing advance rates using different color springs it came with, study the charts and determine what RPM you want your total advance to be all in.

Well it's interesting to delve into this distributor business, I am by no means an engine guru but I do have a question.
I replaced my distributor and springs, I went with lighter springs and weights so that my full advance comes on more quickly or sooner if you will; as my old distributor had the largest or heaviest springs installed .
The differences is really noticeable, it seems the throttle response is much more aggressive. So I wonder what the downside of this change is? I haven't really seen much discussion on this, and I wonder now have you guys ever fooled around much with the distributor or just leave well enough alone
