Question Moisture in valve covers with oil thermostat?

My 502 was just refreshed and I am noticing that there is a lot of condensation in the valve covers.... More now than before.... Builder used the Green Brad Penn oil, so its hard to tell on dipstick of oil is in lower or not. Engine has a Mocal oil thermostat.... could it now be stuck open? I did not remember this much oil in the VC area with the old build.

Thanks for any help!

Do you have an oil temp gauge? I beleive a Mocal oil therostat is factory at at 180 F. that may be why condesation is happening.

No oil temp gauge. No thermostat either. Water temp is just above 100*.... Original builder was Tyler Crockett (w no T stat). New builder tried a T stat and caused the rubber on the exhaust to burn off so we took the Tstat back out.

Woah...hold on.

Does this mean you ran a crossover system with no bypass but put a water thermostat in it ?

You may / may not have sprung a leak in it.

I just mentioned here the other day on another thread (water psi) that I had one on the dyno that went over 40psi and I believe spiked to 60psi (pushed water past head and intake gaskets - oil got full of water) that had crossover system with no bypass and someone had put in a water t-stat.

With a crossover system without a bypass, the t-stat closes off all water while the sea water pump keeps pumping.

Just an FYI.

I have a newer Bravo with dual pickups (side and lower). It does not have a water pressure gauge. It has always had a cross-over since I have owned the boat. I think this cross-over has a bypass (not sure where that leads to?)

See if you can locate or borrow a used WP gauge and connect it with a long rubber hose from the engine compartment to the helm area. WP anywhere from 10-30 lbs. will work. You could skip the WP gauges long term, but it could be expensive if your WP is very far out of these ranges.

As RWS stated, I think the MOCAL's are 180 deg. They used to have a 200 for marine apps. which would be better... call BAT and see if they offer the 200 spring.

I also think without a bypass and adding a thermostat it will shut off the water to the exaust. Not good.
