Default Mercury DTS motors and Crash Boxes how to make work? 520 540 or 565

I have run into a little bit of a problem, I am trying to find some NEW smartcraft motors for my 36 Skater. I want something that runs on regular plus the peace of mind and a warranty of a brand spanking new motors. The new Mercury DTS motors won’t start in gear and won’t run at a 100% in neutral. Has anyone run into this problem with any of the DTS motors and crash boxes. Has any figured out a solution how to make a DTS motor with a crash box?

I would think the Neutral safety switch would be on the shifter and could be overridden when needed. And why would you want/need to run at 100% in neutral? Doesnt sound good for anything (parts wise) Do you have crash boxes now??

Because then I could just leave the motor thinking its in neutral all the time, and just shift the crash box like a 525 and it would start when the crash box is in forward. If the motor knew it was in forward the it would not start.

Oh, I thought you wanted to rev to 100% in Neutral You can disable the Neutral safety switch and start it in any gear you want.. Do you have Crashboxes now??

But the problem is by bypassing the neutral safety switch it will not allow full power. The ECM needs to "see" gear engagement before it will allow full power. If it only sees neutral, it will not run.

This might be kind of hack, but how about a switch rigged off of the throttle linkage that makes the motor think it is in gear at anything over say, 5-10% throttle. Would allow you to start the engine with the sticks all the way back and allow full power once the throttle is opened.

While I understand your problem, I have ZERO practical experience with DTS. But, if you look in this diagram, it looks like the switch (12)is providing feedback from the shift actuator. Could probably jump that harness, or even install the switch.

Just thinking out loud

Seems like you could add a switch to the throttle to send that signal once the throttle moves off idle position.

His goal is to make it think it's in gear 100% of the time, but to your point, maybe tie it into the throttle arm, like a TPS.
