Default MerCruiser 4.5-Liter Engine Earns Innovation Award

Not exactly "huge" power, but interesting nonetheless, http://speedonthewater.com/in-the-ne...novation-award

Yep tested it today on the water. Very smooth running and at idle not like the older V-6 / 4.3 L. it also has a bunch of new features.

Also a real surprise is the Volvo Penta V-6 it runs like a 350 HO MAG on the water.

The new Volvo V-6 has an all aluminum block - heads and so on. It has V V T and is direct fuel injection. Volvo is the first to come out with direct injection for marine apps from a production marine engine builder.

I also tested this motor as well and its a runner for a V-6 that seems to run like a V-8 - 350 HO MAG.

Do you have any info regarding the weight difference between the Mercruiser and the Volvo?

VVT is an amazing technological feat. It is amazing the power you can gain from it. Looks like some of us V8 guys are gonna get a run for our money against a V6!!

The Volvo V-6 is the GM engine that's used in the 2015 trucks but marinized thru Volvo. Have to rephrase as its the first direct injection motor for the I/O - inboard market.

I have all the specs for both motors. I just rolled back home and feels like I have been gone forever. Will post info tonite or late tomorrow.

The Mercruiser V-6 new gen is a lot easier to work on than before.

Some other info first. The throttle body is turned 180 so its facing the rear of the boat. One it makes the cockpit area a lot less noisy and helps with incoming fresh air since most family rec boats have the engine compartment vents in the rear of the hull. The oil pan is new and designed to dampen internal noise as well plus better corrosion resistance.

The cool fuel system is all composite construction - no metal so no corrosion internal to build up like in the past nor any internal paint peeling off running thru the fuel system. Also it is mounted on the front bottom port side of the engine, a lot easier to reach. The water pump housing is in the same location for Bravo apps as before but is all new and a ton easier to service - If I remember correctly 8 bolts then the impeller is in your hands so no more taking the complete assembly off and bring it over to the bench for teardown.

Next the motor mounts are all new, the rear mounts are beefier and the side engine mounts are brand new with dampening effects for noise and vibration. They look like the older fluid mounts that were on the NON balance shaft V-6's in the past but are not those mounts. They a somewhat smaller than those in design but offer a new rubber construction.

The ECM is located top dead center under the composite top engine cover. Also Merc got rid of that problem child yellow flag breaker and replaced it with a red button push breaker. Thank whomever for that because those yellow flag breakers caused issues and running issues. Also the 90 amp fuse is not at the starter anymore, hence one less problem to worry about. Can not remember if it was moved or replace with a breaker or gone completely.

If you have an Alpha outdrive the impeller is in the same location as for all Alpha's in the past. The motor is very smooth at idle and powering up while at rest or running. Would not think its a V-6 because how smooth & vibration free plus how quit the motor runs while under way.

More info to come.

Awesome to see VVT coming to the marine world! It's about time too. My 1994 Porsche has it!

Volvo Penta has had V V T now for over 2 years in their gas V-8 6.0 L - 380 hp then the 430hp and their latest 350 hp. They all use the same platform - the 6.0 L GM LS engine to get these 3 levels of horsepower. Its all in the tune and camshaft.
