Default Re-power build up advice

Got a buddy that has pulled his whimpy tired old 454 carb'd motor. Gonna build some ponies now and he's decided on most everything except intake/fuel delivery.

It will be:

+.030 (454)
eagle crank (stock stroke)
eagle rods
JE pistons (9.9-10:1).
HP 500 cam
full roller
320cc aluminum heads (oversized valves)
EMI Thunder manifolds.

what intake manifold/carb to run ???

Couple questions, why the eagle crank and rods? What gen block? What brand heads? If you're going with a whole new rotating assembly why not go .250 longer stroke?

I would look at doing a stroker as well.

I'm thinking maybe budget? But let's get some answers and keep this thread headed in the direction of a couple others. Great to see the excellent tech articles of late.

My experience says, no name mentioned 320cc heads are Procomp.

If keeping a 454 and going aftmkt heads, I'd be all over a set of good oval ports like AFR's and then distant second Brodix's.

I too wonder why buy aftmkt crank, rods, pistons and not go with a larger 4.25" stroke crank.

If staying with 4" stroke, why not just source a good used GM crank? Then buy a good set of aftermarket rods. Maybe even install some quality rod bolts in a set of 7/16 stockers.

A set of the AFR 265's with the inconel exhaust upgrade would really wake a 454 based motor up. Save the money on the stroker crank and put it towards the heads. Don't cheap out on the lifters, pushrods and rockers. Bob M. can give you an excellent deal on the heads and valvetrain components. I would find a forged GM 4-inch stroke crank in the Swap Shop and go with that if trying to stay within a budget.

Most guys want 3-400 for a used gm crank plus shipping. At that point just buy an eagle. Or I have a gen 4 crank for 200 lol
