Default Is anybody storing gas, witih gas prices so low now

In my area premium is 2.32 a gallon. I have entertained the thought of getting one of those 275 gallon totes in a steel cahe and filling that with gas to use in the boat next summer. The totes cost about $75. Ive thought about this before and did the math. 291 gallons at 2.32 = $675 versus last time I filled my boat up it cost $1200. I have a gantry hoist to get the tank out of the back of my truck and would just store in outside covered up. Has anybody thought of doing this? or something similar? My neighbor is cool and wouldn't care what I'm doing. I"m thinking that I would have to paint this thing red too just to pacify the idiots at the gas station.

Ok blast away.

fuel degrades over time
oxy fuel is good for about 90 days , I was told by someone who works at a large refinery here in MN that it may not leave the refinery for 6 weeks

I herd that gas looses about an octane a month. 6 months and your 93 will be 87. That's why I haven't been up a to the gas station filling up everything I own. Shame you couldn't go to the gas station and buy gas at todays price for future use. On your pre paid gas card instead of dollars it would have gallons on it.

1.99 here can be found here currently. Here is my take on the general public storing gas in large supplies.

Gas really has a shelf life of 30 to 90 days MAX depending how well stored or not and possible 6 months to 9 months MAX with a really good fuel additives & fuel stabilizer added to the stored fuel from day one but there is more to it than just adding additives.

Stored fuel to have a chance for any shelf life needs to be 100 % stored properly away from direct sun lite, heat, non changing temps, and a 100% dry place - no condensation and non evaporating conditions. Once condensation / moisture enters your stored fuel, it is completely no good to use. Phase separation will start on the spot if it is E-10 fuel.

Anyways might cost you more in the long run trying to keep the fuel from degrading too much or if its degrades too much then you should not use it.. Also the longer the fuel sits - it will lose its octane value rating. Once fuel starts to oxidize you CAN NOT turn the clock back and renew it with additives added to your stored fuel. Air and heat exposure starts the degrading / oxidation process right away. . Just my 2 C's.

race gas is good for years if stored properly http://www.vpracingfuels.com/index.h...estion&ID=1978

Kinda like housing prices crashing years ago and than stabilizing for a little bit before everything went to hell and I told everyone who wanted to buy in to hold on buying and than the real chit hit the fan.

All those guys who were the SMART ones who bought in at the intermediate part of the crash and we have not seen hide nor hair of them here in years.

Same thing.

This is not a short term thing ,these low oil prices are going to be established by free trade price not hedged up prices from the speculation that has been going for a while. in the past.

Who on here thinks they are smart enough to buy a oil future against the Saudis holding all the cards right now?

What nobody has even began to mention is the big Giant chitty pink elephant in the room.

Can anybody say no more phukin ethanol in our fuel ?

The current priced of oil will barely sustain the subsidies needed to keep this hoax going and the Saudis are looking for 40 dollar a barrel oil to be the market price for a the upcoming years.

Corn will once again be the half way worthless product it has been for anything other than feed and will bottom out also.

We can hope food prices may stabilize and come down along with every other transported product in the last 6 years that has increased because of fuel surcharges and inflation but history shows not much comes down unless it becomes obsolete .

It`s been so tempting not to fill up both the tanks full. Pretty common for a 9 month layup here in the midwest, I don`t go WOT till I put some fresh stuff in there but I don`t think the fuel falls apart as much as some might think, runs just fine after winter.
Tommy are you saying you think the prices will stay low for a while? I thought the saudis were trying to squeeze the small US producers out of the market. ...then price goes up again, probably more expensive then before with those companies out of business.

Race gas is still $7/gallon.

actually its not the octane that changes its the volatiles. if im not mistaken octane is a fuel burn suppressant, high octane is slower burning to allow longer timing curves (someone correct me if im wrong here)

there was an oso member some years ago that purchased octane testing equipment, very expensive if I remember like mid twenty grand. anyway he tested all fuel that he put in his boat and found that nearly every time he tested a certain octane it was alwas on the plus side. in other words when the pump says 93 +-1 it was always the one plus (94) he also tested every old gas he could find right up to old gas in garage sale lawn mowers and the octane ratings still existed but it was the volitals that degraded.

Fuel that has turn dark like the color of ice tea has burn / evap the light ends out of the fuel and the dark ends are left for a short jist. as to why it has darken. Leave a cup of fuel out in a glass jar with the lid off outside on a nice day and will start turning dark within 4 to 8 hours. Fuel loses its octane value about 1 to 3 points in about 4 to 8 months if I recall correctly.

It all depends on the environment fuel lives in and water absorption. Ethanol alone has a octane value of 112 or 114 - that's why I say water absorption causing phase separation - the ethanol falls out mixes with the water and the octane goes with it for huge loses of 3 to 5 octane points on the spot. Fuel quality today is even worse than it was just 5, 10 years ago.

I also read and powerboat magazine had this reported as well about 5 years ago that once fuel is on the way to the gas station storage tanks - it already started losing its octane value. I believe one of the reasons it might be set a point or 2 higher than labeled from the fuel refineries to match what the gas station label reports the fuel octane.

You are correct higher the octane the slower it burns or should say slower combustion time.
