I'm looking at a cc boat that has 2010 300 Verados with 400 hours on them. Saltwater use. What concerns should I have? Is this a lot of hours? Thanks!

Really? If so, that sucks! I was planning on upgrading from my 250EFI 2-strokes over to Verados in the future......but I need them to last longer than two years!!!!!

The 300 is a standard production engine, it better last more than 400 hours with proper maintenance. Get an engine report from the CPUs and see if they have been ran real hard with a lot of time at WOT.

They should last 700-1000 hours minimum.

Wow that sucks. I just bought a boat with 500hrs on suzukis. I expect them to go at least 2000! I've heard of up to 3800, and I've personally fished on a scarab with 8000 on yamahas.

Run the scans on the engine(s). Its like anything and the importance of professional maintenance and on time with it. There is many Verado's out running around as work boats, tour boats with 1500 hours on them.

Verado's can have their problems especially saltwater use from oil coolers rotting out, lower powerhead bolts breaking, and earlier gearcase failures. The newer gearcase are beefier, If I remember correctly the problem ones were around 2009 or 2010.

Also this seems to be a problem as well check out Merc service bulletin 2011-03 has to do with the bell crank & bad corrosion problems. There is a few more issues here and there but this app really is something I never worked on as I am located inland nor see. IMO I would rather have a Yamaha or the Suzuki.

Verados, if well maintained will go several thousand hrs. Early on they had some problems but merc has pretty well solved those. Get the serial numbers and have a mercury dealer run them. They will be able to tell you if the pertinent service bulletins have been addressed on them. We maintain a boat that has over 5000 documented hrs on twin 250s' without a single power head failure. all models before 2011 had 4.8 inch lower gear case housings and they occasionally had gear problems. Mercury introduced larger 5.44 inch housings. We had to replace the lowers at approximately 2000 hrs due to a gear failure. I just finished full rebuilds on the 5.44 housings aND they had 3000 hrs on them without a single problem. The only other issue we have had are the PCMS that both failed around 3000 hrs. In my 20+ years of experience I have worked on many outboards and would recommend verados without question

Are you talking about 350s? They weren't offered with a warranty. There may be some confusion here regarding 350s vs 275-300s.

Two weeks from now there may be a lot more options.
