I went to my boat in its hiding place before spring and was going to get serial number off of drive to identify which one I have to order (2) of everything impellers, u joint bellows etc etc etc. The plate right below the greese fitting for gimbal bearing that says Serial# is blank and or cant see anything. Its as clean as day but no #'s or anything. On either drive. Is there another location? Is the serial number that is on valve cover of engine the right thing? Kinda confused boat is a 1986 Wellcraft Nova 2 260hp twins. Any advice of another location would be great.

The drive serial number is on the port (left) side on the upper housing. It should be stamped into the housing even if someone has put a new decal over it.
In any case the is a Gen 1 Alpha, you can find parts for it here http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selec...?doc_nbr=99964
There are actually 2 flavors, and I see that there are 2 u joints depending on serial so you really should locate it. If you post the numbers on the valve cover I will take a look in Mercury and see if I can find it that way for you.

Your app is an Alpha 1 - Gen 1
it would be wise to buy a transom repair kit for your app - it is cheaper this way than buying each part. I have anything you need for this including the transom repair kit, all brand new of course.
