I measured a piston today and it is .025 in the hole. The gasket was .039 for a total quench of .064.
The short block is good so I'm not going to be decking it. There was no sign of spark knock/detonation before.
Its a .040 over 454 that I plan on running 308 dart irons in the 5600 range.
Is this too much quench? I always heard in the .040s to .050. I can run a thinner MLS gasket to get it to .050ish but they are of course twice the price.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Well, nice to see a thread without a battle, haha. It's amazing the piston looks almost zero decked until you measure it.
I'm sure there are plenty of engines out there running .060 plus with no issues, as I was, but looks like I will tighten it up to what I can.

Ok, I'll be running this pretty hard as I'm shooting for 550 horse out of a 462ci 454. I'll get the quench down.
How about compression? I plan to set it after everything is decided by deck the head. I know it depends on the cam for dynamic ratio, but can I go to say 9.2:1 and run regular? With a cam close to a 741 (but maybe less)
