Hydrofoils have been around for a hundred years and have never caught on with pleasure boaters. In my opinion, they are just too complex and problematic for the typical boater.

A promo video of some home built redneck contraption some guy built with, mostly likely.plans out a 1974 edition of popular mechanics. Judging from the lack of pictures on the website, I seriously doubt a full size prototype has even been made much less a marketable boat...

Back to the 1960's. They tried that kind of stuff back then, never really caught on.

Personally, I think hydrofoils are an outdated innovation (if that's possible) that has been tested before and long term, wasn't as good as everyone hoped. Had them in the 70's on Sydney Harbour in a commercial application but they were ultimately replaced by much more efficient cats. The traditional old ferries are still extremely popular too.

Perhaps now with electric power and new technology the world is ready for something like this in a pleasure boat but my guess, the almighty dollar rules and I hate to think what one of those things would cost.....?

Pics from the web showing the hydrofoil ferry and the new type cat with the old ferry in the background.
