What material do I need to use for fresh water ? Choices are Aluminum, magnesium or Zinc. My guess would be Zinc ??

Fresh water I believe you want magnesium.

I looked at my receipts, I bought aluminum. According to the article I should have bought Mag., thanks for posting

Merc Aluminum anodes are fine in fresh water. I take care of a few boats that sit at the dock every year for beginning of June through September. one of them is an 86 and the other a 94, and their original outdrives look fine. I replace all anodes when necessary which is usually 3-4 years or so.

Mags dissolve much faster...so watch them !

Oh, and if you use MAgs, do not ever drop the boat in salt water. The aluminums work in both fresh and salt.

BTW, Zinc is only for salt water. Aluminum can be used in fresh and/or salt. Mag for fresh only.

Magnesium all the way if you only boat in fresh water.
