Valve springs, valves and push rods

Ok. I've been doing some researching on these things. I had gen 5 502s. Brand new gen 6 shortblocks. Already have the gen 6 roller lifters and dogbones and stuff. Gonna be using gen 6 1622 cams. The heads are off my gen 5 502. Not sure of casting number as I'm not next to boat. Merc part numbers are available and astronomical, I figure I could get a better price on better stuff. Also will be running scorpion 1.7s. I know I need the stud kit and that's ordered.
Also likely gonna order Teague valve covers to clear any and all valve train mods. These are being put together at stock spec and they will have sidemount whipples in the near future. I Just want the boat useable while I acquire the upgraded fuel systems, ecms, have Eddie do fuel rail mods and harness mods. Wanna do the blowers right and don't like feeling rushed so I will accumalate this stuff over time and when it's all said and done bolt it up.

I hear what you have going on and even though I'm sure your capable of assembling your heads I would suggest your machine shop just order what you need and assemble. That way you get the correct locators, retainers, keepers, installed height as well as the correct springs. I didn't confirm springs for the cam mentioned however sounds like youve looked into those. Are they pretty much stock replacement? Just some thoughts.

Because I've been turning wrenches my whole life. I like doing and learning my own stuff. If it breaks I'd rather blame me and learn from it then blame someone else. If you just pay someone else all the time you never learn

I have the gen6 block with the stock iron heads also. so this might help you with your setup
I used isky tool room springs, 8005A with retainers 200st10deg
Push rods are built by smith brothers after doing the measurements for motor
Comp cams rockers CCA-1820-16
valve installed height is 1.870-1.875
Remember go as large as you can with the push rod diameter. that should help you stand up to more. The tip weight on the rockers is more critical than component weight

i am putting a gen 6 together. using the 454HO GM cam. the 1622 is essentially a 385 mag roller cam. that lift you can run the orig net lash rockers and stock length pushrods assuming stock length valves. what exhaust you running?

Yes. The 1622 is the stock 502 mag cam. It's going back to stock so when I add the whipples no real tuning is necessary. Eddie young has the stock program loaded and easy to load ecm. If I bump cam and heads then I'm into dyno tuning. So just keeping stock for the time being.

I completely understand. I had a thread a while back where I caught the machine shop making some crucial mistakes on a set I had them assemble as long as they were there. It was an oversight on their part but regardless I would have been costly. I didn't mean to question your ability what so ever. What are you going shoot for with valve guide/stem clearances? .0018-0020.

Thank you. This is what I'm in the process of learning. Been reading articles though not easy on a phone. Looking for real world advice from guys who have done it. What should I shoot for. What measurements are most critical. I ask before I screw it up hoping to avoid the mistake and continue to learn. Lol
