So I've decided I want to sell my 21 foot crownline and step up to a speed boat. I really like the 271 and the outlaw 25 (early 2000 models) and I was wondering which one would be the better choice. I mostly ride back in the rivers but make my way out to the Chesapeake bay from time to time. Basically I thought I was set on the outlaw but have read about issues with halls and transom's. What do you guys think about these boats? Also what are key things to look out for on used boats with a 496 ho(wear items ect.)

Some of the early 496HO's had issues with sensors going bad. I had a 2004 model and it was pretty solid. Those two boats are really around the same size as far as running length. Formula has always been considered high quality. Windshield vs. fairing?

Looks wise, I'd choose the OL all day over the Formula, it has the timeless classic offshore look.
Quality wise, I'd probably lean towards the Formula.
Either boat can have rot issues, just spend the $ up front on a survey by a reputable and qualified surveyor. Pay now or pay later...........

Definitely get the transom looked at especially if it has thru hull exhaust, and the engine compartment stringers. Two most common areas to go first in wood constructed boats. Dependent on the surveyor, my advice would be get a mechanical guy to check mechanicals, then get a fiberglass guy to come check for soft spots.
