Default Help painting my BBC

Hey oso members I am looking to paint my 502. Last time I painted my motor, it looked good in the beginning but then it started pealing up. Does anyone know if there is a specific paint or method that would prevent this from happening again? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's gotta be clean or the paint never attaches and then you add heat the pealing begins. I use Rustoleum gloss black spray paint from home depot and it holds up well. Even on exhaust manifolds. Also easy to touch up and you can spray it into the paint can lid and use a brush to prevent over spray if needed.

Epoxy primer and a single stage acrylic urethane or enamel.

Rattle can paint is not going to hold up over time.

There is a good thread on this from a few years back. Can't remember the title but try a search on engine paint. I remember that Eddie Young and a bunch of others participated.

The old school merc paints used to do well when extracted from the can and shot with a real gun
The best one for small single stage projects i had was a el cheapo harbor freight my neighbor gave me
Made imron and sherwin williams ultra look good enough to pass for powdercoat. By people that did powdercoat. Plus the cheap mid size hvlp guns cut the airborne paint factor by 400%
Nason urethane single stage offers great bang for the buck and will adhere to bare metal very well if prepped properly. And thier gm 8555 jet black is the best over the counter s.s. black i have found so far

This is the one I was thinking of. Note Eddies post, he did my engine three years ago and it still looks new.

Get it good and clean use a self-etch or epoxy primer. I have used the SEM self-ecthing primer (aerosol) in the past with good success. Then a decent single stage like nason ful-thane urethane. If you are going a solid color. If not you can use basecoat clear coat for metallic or custom colors. The primer is a big part of it and making sure it is cleaned and scuffed. Then using a quality two-part finish over the top. Which makes it chemical resistant to like gas and oil. Which in return also make it clean up real easy. I have done a few different finishes in the past and no problems. On this last one we tried the hydrograhics out. Which I thought was different and kind of fun.
