Default 088 gen 4 heads on a 540?

Blew a transmission so i am pulling the motor to replace and thinking about 540s in its place bu can only swing short blocks at this time. Will gen 4. 088 heads work on this. I know its not ideal.only have about 60hrs on totally rebuilding the heads new everything and would like to get a couple years. Out of them while i save up for some aluminum heads. Was off work for 3 yrs from a wreck and funds are tight.
thanks chris

I ran a 548 with 088 heads and made over 600hp. They work fine just not the best.

same here, 088's with a 548 and Whipple made 800HP worked great.

Perhaps not the optimal choice for all out power but certainly no harm. If the springs work with the cam then I say run it in good conscience. I’d take a set of fresh heads over spending $5k+ for a 50hp upgrade any day. Now if you switch cams now and need all new springs etc then I’d highly recommend selling the 088 heads and buying new after having just gone through this. For what I have into setting up my Edelbrock heads I wish I just bought a fresh set already set up.
