Default 17.5 Tires

16" tires today for some reason are crap. I have changed all my tire and rims on 4 trailers to 17.5's. I have not had 1 failure since switching. There are some aluminum wheels available on the internet that look nice. I just used steel on 3 trailers. These are equipment and dump trailers that get used everyday and are loaded heavy. I was having a failure a week with 16's. Carlisle and Marathons both were exploding. The swap is pricey but in the long run worth it. FYI some 17.5 wheels are hub piloted and some are stud piloted. Send a closeup photo of your existing wheel and hub to whoever you are buying from to save a return freight charge. Your lug nuts will likely not fit new wheel so get them as a package with the new wheels.

Its been almost 2 years since I have switched to 17.5's 18 tires in all. Not 1 failure or flat !!

I got 17.5’s on my most recent Myco and love them. 4,200 miles since taking delivery in June and 0 issues.

That's great info, and thank you for sharing. What brand/model tire are you using?

My only concern with 17.5" tires would be that you are not finding a replacement or a "get you through" tire quickly if you need one. I assume that most of you guys run with at least 2 spares on longer trips.

Since I am spending time on the Toy Hauler forums a bit now, many folks with the bigger units have moved up to 16" G-Rated Sailun tires.

They all have great reviews and feedback.

Goodyear also has the new Endurance trailer tire out now too, that is better than their old Marathon branded tire, and has decent reviews from what I've seen.

Were you running 14ply tires on your 16" wheels?
I haven't had a tire issue since switching to 14 ply tires, I wanted to go 17.5 just didn't want to spend the extra money. (this is on an equipment trailer but I'm still curious)

.
I had those G Rated Sailun tires on a heavy triple axle race car trailer. I loved them. I put a ton of weight on them and they never even bulged. Towed across the country a few times at 70mph, never an issue. They held air like a boss too, I ran them at 90psi and I virtually never had to put air in them.

if I were building a new trailer for a heavy boat, I’d do the 17.5s but if you already have 16s, the Sailuns are a great choice.

I have dual spares, both mounted on spare hubs. They are Continental HTL2 Eco plus tires

17.5 upgrade from the 14 ply 16" setup. Appreciate the reviews in this thread, helped to confirm this as a sensible update.
