It always baffles me why so many old boats sit in yards and make peoples property look like a junk yard. Do these people think there is some kind of value? Do they think it might run after sitting for 10 years? Or is that they don't want to pay to dispose of it? It sure would be nice to clean up some of these yards.

Pretty much yes to everything. And once you add a "Name" or some sort of "History" to it, it gets 10 times worse. "So and so drove that boat in the Bla Bla Bla race back in 19 an 72...what …… that tree will pop right out of there...." as you look at a sagging hull on its trailer buried up to the keel rollers in some backyard.
After many family boat ownerships and a couple of my own, I decided that the most likely contributor to hull death is wood rot. Once the cost to repair exceeds the value of the hull or whole boat, that’s when they die. Hence I was very diligent to shop for a wood free boat in case I ended up owning it a long time.
I think OB boats tend to have a better service life as well due to the relative ease with which they can be repowered.
